Belle Le Grand - 1951 - Allan Dwan
Directed by Allan Dwan
Starring Vera Ralston, John Carroll, William Ching, Hope Emerson, Grant Withers, Alden 'Stephen' Chase, John Qualen
This excellent Western gives an important place to women. As such, it is a precursor of The Woman they almost lyunched also directed by Allan Dwan. Three main actresses appear on the screen : Muriel Lawrence, Hope Emerson and Vera Ralston. Hope Emerson is stunning as always in the kind of role that fits her so well (she can be seen in The Guns of Fort Petticoat and Westward the women).
Vera Ralston was an obvious choice for the title role. Republic Studios and more specifically Herbert Yates tried in vain to make her a star.
The film also try to describe the financial system of the time and the mines. The first theme rather rarely mentioned in the genre would also be part of the plot of The Silver River directed by Raoul Walsh.
In a nutshell, a well done picture.
