The Westerner - 1940 - William Wyler

Directed by William Wyler
Starring Gary Cooper, Walter Brennan, Doris Davenport, Fred Stone, Forrest Tuckers, Paul Hurst, Chill Wills, Dana Andrews

The Westerner is a great 1940 western, one year after John Ford's Stagecoach.

Gary Cooper is great in the lead role. As for Walter Brennan, one can only salute one of his best performances, rewarded with an Academy Award (his 3rd and last). Has character, Judge Roy Bean, has been played by Paul Newman, Edgar Buchanan, ... Cooper and Brennan would be together again in Sergeant York (1941). A real complicity has grown between these two actors.
The story is the struggle between cattlemen and homesteaders, even though Roy Bean (and the interpretation of Brennan) relegates the subject to the background.

Although in black and white, the photography is very successful with memorable shots.
Two thumbs up !

A great, poetic western of the 30-40's (yes, you've read poetic !). Excellent Gary Cooper and Walter Brennan for brillant characters and dialogues. A movie you'lle remember, even if you don't like westerns... Perhaps it's that's you'll call a masterpiece... ?

A great western! One of my favorites. Along with Walter Brennan and Gary Cooper, the real star of this film is Gregg Toland, whose cinematography rivets the viewer's attention on the screen from beginning to end. Toland, who died tragically young in 1948 at the age of 44, is universally regarded as one of the very greatest cinematographers of all time, and THE WESTERNER was one of his finest efforts in a very, very great streak of films over a relatively short period of time.

Thank you ,Daniel for this formations ,you make me want to buy the DVD of the Westerner with the duo of actors talented Gary Cooper and Walter Brennan , filmed with the greatest care by the cinematographer, Gregg Tolan. The great filmaker Orson welles said of him "Everything he knew about art of photography was a great cameraman" and he will also say, speaking of Gregg Tolan" No only was he greatest cameraman with whom I had the pleasure of working.

I totaly agreed with Orson Welles and you, Gregg Tolan was probably the greatest cameraman in story of cinema.
