A well done Western
Three hours to kill has all the characteristics of a western starring Randolph Scott as the lone cowboy who lost his wife and seeks a culprit. The main title music would also be used in A Lawless Street, in which several sets would be reused. Finally, Charles Lawton Jr. (photography) and Harry Joe Brown (production) are part of the crew of several films with Scott. The film also shares some similarities with Decision at Sundown 1957 with the theme of revenge, the hero who has lost everything.

It is surprising that the studio chose Dana Andrews for this type of production as the actor was turning the same year Elephant's Walk and Comanchein 1956, which are rather more important productions. The other actors are correct including Donna Reed and Diane Foster. James Westerfield is remarkable as a bartender (he would resume this role in Decision at Sundown).

There are similarities with The Ox-Bow Incident (not only for the presence of Dana Andrews but also the theme of lynching) and also in Hang'em high.
The script takes a "film noir" side with flashbacks and a whodunit. The director Alfred L. Werker had also made several film noirs (Shock, He Walked by Night, ...).
