Simon Kane drubs his supervisor Osgood for revealing that Kane's wife deserted him and his son. Kane had been working off the $2000 he embezzled to search for his wife, but Osgood's taunts made his life miserable, so now the single father can't face further derision from the town. Kane pays Osgood $2000 and packs to start over elsewhere. But Osgood hires an assassin to bump off Kane after his stagecoach heads West.

Simon Kane offers a British sailor a ride in his stagecoach when he spots him standing forlornly by the side of the road. The sailor tells Simon he jumped ship in San Francisco and a band of men have been chasing him ever since. The five men, all federal marshals, surround Simon's stagecoach and tell him that his newest passenger fled a ship that contained bubonic plague and they were authorized to kill everyone the Britisher came in contact with to prevent the diseases spread.

A couple engaged to be married buy all the tickets for the westbound run from Timberline, booting off Mr. Duncan, one of the scheduled passengers, in the process. When the stagecoach stops at the next way-station, Luke discovers that an outlaw gang was planning on robbing Duncan of the $20,000 he was carrying. Since their intended victim wasn't on-board, the owlhoots decide to hold the other passengers for ransom.

Si une caravane et un rassemblement de bétails pouvaient engendrer des séries télévisées populaires, pourquoi pas une qui traitait d’une ligne de diligence dans les années 1960 qui reliait le Missouri à San Francisco. Timberline Stageline, basée à Outpost, était dirigée par Luke Perry (Wayne Rogers) qui avait rencontré et embauché Simon (Sime) Kane (Robert Bray) et son fils Davy Kane (Richard Eyer) dans le premier épisode de “Stagecoach West” intitulé “High Lonesome”. Alors que Luke Perry et Sime Kane étaient sur la piste à travers le pays, le dépôt à Outpost était dirigé par Zeke Bonner (James Burke).
Produits par Vincent M. Fennelly, les 38 épisodes en noir et blanc de “Stagecoach West” furent diffusés sur ABC de 21h à 22h entre le 4 octobre 1960 et le 27 juin 1961.
Les histoires, auxquelles contribuèrent plusieurs scénaristes, concernaient les divers passagers de la diligence et les personnes que Luke et Sime rencontraient en route, ainsi que leurs batailles avec des voleurs de banque, des Indiens, l’empiétant chemin de fer et même les conditions atmosphériques.
La direction de ces épisodes se trouva entre les mains expertes de Donald McDougall (1917-1991) qui commença à réaliser les épisodes de Flying A pour Gene Autry avant de graduellement monter en grade avec “Trackdown”, “Au nom de la loi”, “Bonanza”, “Le virginien” et autres, et entre celles de Thomas Carr (1907-1997) dont la carrière de réalisateur remontait aux films de série B de Sunset Carson pour Republic en 1945.

Au sujet de la série, Richard Eyer dit aux auteurs Tom et Jim Goldrup pour leur livre « Growing Up On the Set », “Elle me garda occupé et était généralement une rigolade. Ce fut une expérience très positive. Quand ils m’embauchèrent, ce fut une période de transition dans ma croissance parce que lorsqu’ils tournèrent le pilote, j’avais 13 ans et très jeune pour mon âge; un vrai petit enfant. Le pilote fut vendu et quand on a commencé la production, 8 mois s’étaient passés et soudainement, j’étais en pleine puberté et dans l’adolescence. Je suis sûr que le producteur pensa, ‘Attendez une minute, où est le jeune enfant que j’ai embauché?’ Mais cela colla pour le rôle et quand je le regarde maintenant, je suis impressionné. C’était un sacré bon western.”
La plupart de la série fut tourné chez Four Star (les vieux studios de Republic) mais Richard Eyer ajouta, “Par moment on tournait sur sites. On est allé à Apache Junction, Arizona, et y avons tourné de nombreuses scènes de la diligence en action, puis ils les ont dispensées tout au long de la série. Nombre de ces scènes de moi dans la diligence furent faites par une doublure. La doublure, la plupart du temps adulte, était un nain appelé Billy Curtis.”
Bien qu’elle suivait “L’homme à la carabine” et “Wyatt Earp” sur ABC les jeudis soir, “Stagecoach West” ne trouva jamais son public, même face à “Thriller” sur NBC et “Tom Ewell” et “Red Skelton” sur CBS. A la fin 1961, la populaire série western télévisée d’ABC du jeudi soir faisait partie de l’histoire. “Wyatt Earp” fut supprimée après six saisons en juin 1961 et “L’homme à la carabine ” fut déplacée au lundi soir. ABC remplaça tous ses westerns par “Bugs Bunny Cartoons”, “Bachelor Father”, “Calvin and the Colonel” et “The New Breed”.
Robert Bray décéda le 7 mars 1983; James Burke décéda à 82 ans en 1968. En 1972 Wayne Rogers endossa le rôle de Trapper John dans la classique série comique “M*A*S*H” suivi du populaire “House Calls”. Plus tard, Wayne Rogers devint un homme d’affaires et un investisseur, dirigeant les affaires de Peter Falk et James Caan entre autres. En tant que secrétaire général et président de Wayne Rogers and Co. Investments, il prit la direction des commerces de proximité Stop-N-Save pendant plus de 20 ans et fut l’un des trois investisseurs du Kleinfield Bridal Store de New York City. Il fut un contributeur régulier des programmes financiers de Fox News Channel jusqu’à sa mort à 82 ans en 2015. Richard Eyer devint un professeur à Bishop, Californie, et possédait une société de construction de courts de tennis.
On se rappellera d’eux pour cette excellente série qui aurait mérité de durer bien plus longtemps qu’une seule saison.
